Winter~

Lake Huron Shores Snowshoe or Ski Outing- (3hrs)
Discover the mysteries of Mother Nature work as you snowshoe the lakeshores’ wind and water swept topography. Take a step back in time and learn about the history of snowshoes, develop techniques while experiencing the ecology of Lake Huron shoreline communities in its winter state. Anticipate seeing animal tracks, like otter, snowshoe hare, and winter birds. Witness frozen ice sheets along near shore waters. Campfire lunch provided if requested. Includes healthy hot lunch, naturalist guide, snowshoes or skis $45

Lake Michigan Dunes Cross Country Ski Adventure-(Full day or half day) Traverse ancient sand dunes blanketed in hardwoods and fresh snow. Hear sounds of the Pileated Woodpecker and other hardy birds who survive in these Upper Peninsula winters. Learn about winter ecology and discover how to read animal signs. View beautiful landscape overlooking the ice caves and blue waters of Lake Michigan. Includes healthy hot lunch, naturalist guide, and skis (if needed). $55

Lake Superior Overlook Snowshoe Outing-(3hrs)Travel by snowshoe up one of the Upper Peninsula unique overlooks. View Lake Superior from one of the highest points in the region. Circumnavigate Monocle Lake in the company of guide who will teach you about the history of snowshoeing, techniques and tell stories of life in the North woods. Drive along the Lake Superior shores and experience the surrounding Bay Mills Indian reservation lands. Includes hot beverages and healthy snacks, naturalist guide, snowshoes. $55.

Lake Huron Nightlife Snowshoe & Campfire Dinner Outing-(5pm-8pm) Explore the night by snowshoe. Travel across wind and water swept topography of Lake Huron shores. Take a step back in time and learn about the history of snowshoes, develop techniques while experiencing the ecology of Lake Huron shoreline communities in its winter state. Listen to nighttime sounds, like trees crackling and crispy snow covered trails. View the night time sky and let your imagination wander. A campfire dinner will be provided. Includes campfire dinner, naturalist guide, snowshoes. $65. FULL MOON Dates: January 22, February 21, March 21, 2008

By Bike~Spring-Fall

Les Cheneaux Village Biking Tours- (2hrs)
Nice & easy bike ride to various points of interest including museums & local sustainable business ventures. Wildlife and history featured. Great for families. $25 per person. Contact us for family rates. Bring your own bike or let us provide you with one.

Natural Pavement Pursuits- (5hrs) See an exquisite globally rare natural limestone pavement and grasslands community by mountain bike. Drummond Island has one of Michigan’s rarest sites in the world. View beautiful shoreline and limestone ledges with fossils. Fabulous place for an invigorating swim. $75 per person-bikes & refreshments provided. Frequent stops & relaxed pace.

 

Bois Blanc Island Wonders- (full day)
Spend a day on Bois Blanc Island and discover the cultural and natural history of this remote place. The island features a complex of boreal forest and fen communities that extend from the shoreline to the interior. Several rare and protected species, like the Eastern Massauga rattlesnake and dwarf lake iris are exciting species to see. We will have a unique opportunity to view an island on inland lake, while standing on an island on a lake!
 Depart at 7am from Cheyboygan. Includes lunch & ferry pass, $85. Overnight lodging & bike rentals available.

By Foot~

Cave Tours (3hrs) Experience Michigan's pemier karst cave. view formations, natrual arches and an underground waterfall. Walk trails featuring a variety of sinkholes and beautiful hardwood forests. Historic limestone quarry remains nearby revealing limestone bedrock. Typcially offered in teh summer, though skiing to the caves in the winter is also an option. $95 includes lunch, helmet, headlamps, and donation for stewardship to the conservancy.

Cliff Overlook Hike-(5hrs) Explore Drummond Islands backcountry shoreline, where bear, loons and wolves frequent. Hike 7 miles along bouldered shorelines and through cedar forests. Traverse onto higher terrain where aspen forests are stunted by the lack of soil. Reach the easternmost edge of the Upper Peninsula. Abundant scenic beauty. $65 per person. Lunch provided. Must have good hiking shoes or boots. Trail is rocky and sometimes wet.

Birding Trips-May-June (7am-9am) On Drummond Island and along Lake Huron shores view migratory birds. Drummond Island provides an unique opportunity to experience a sharp-tail grouse lek during the early spring. Leks are a group of males that dance in courtship. Along the shores of Lake Huron discover bald eagle resting and feeding areas. Easy hiking. Fall dates & packages available upon request. $20 per person Les Cheneaux. $30 per person on Drummond. Bring binoculars. We'll have a birding scope available. Evening hikes can be scheduled also.

Paddling~

Easy-going Family Kayak Jaunt- (2 & 4hr trips) Visit tranquil Duck Bay in the Les Cheneaux Islands or Potagannissing Bay near Drummond Island. Let the kids explore life in a Great Lakes Marsh. Contact us for family rates prices & schedule.

Scheduled Day Trips 2008


Raku on The Rim-custom dates (10am-4pm) Learn a 16th century, traditional Japanese ceramic art process while glazing and firing your own pot. The outdoor kilns are located at the artists’ home on the top of the Niagaran Escarpment in Les Cheneaux. This Great Lakes basin rim formation has created some of the highest elevations in the region. $120 per person. Homemade lunch provided, premade pots ready for you to raku.

Full Moon Kayak Outings (3 hours) Paddle in moonlit waters. This is a great way to watch a sunset and listen to the night life in a marsh. Kayak gear & instruction provided. Les Cheneaux. $65 per person. Times may vary slighty due to sunset and moonrise times. May 20-Full Flower Moon, June 18-Full Strawberry Moon, July 18th-Full Buck Moon, Aug 16th-Full Sturgeon Moon. Sept 15th-Harvest Moon.

Bois Blanc Island Wildflowers by bike-May 31th & June 1 (7am-5pm) Travel by ferry with bikes to the island. Tour island by bike and see some of Michigan’s more exquisite botanicals. See dwarf lake iris in full bloom, one of Michigan’s rarest flower, and designated as the state wildflower. See other spring wildflower ephemerals. Biking is easy going. Lunch and ferry included. $85 per person. Bikes available for rent. Contact us for family rates. Make this an overnight and stay in an island B & B!
