Island Explorations
Discover the ecology and local culture on the second largest freshwater island in the United States. This multi-sport ecotour will take you by mountain bike to both the North and South shores to experience the Island's geologically unique and globally rare natural features. You will have an opportunity to learn about the Niagaran Escarpment. This geological formation provides a variety of habitats. The most dramatic natural communities are small patches of habitat called Alvar and only found a few places on earth within the United States, Canada, Estonia, and the Baltic Region of Europe. It wasn't until recent years that scientists and naturalists in North America began recognizing and classifying these habitats. The limestone bedrock that is abundant on the island was formed in warm tropical seas between 460 and 370 million years ago. We will also travel by sea kayak through the Potagannissing Islands where we will visit an island managed as a national wildlife refuge. Bald eagles, osprey and terns make this island cluster their home. Drummond is truly a remarkable place where you will find nature in abundance. Lodging is at comfortable and unique Drummond Island Resort and Conference Center. below- Whitetail deer shedding Winter Coat
